Lots of people choose to do their Christmas shopping online these days, but why spend your time trawling through websites from your living room when you could use it as a great excuse to jet off somewhere exciting? Make sure you get plenty of extra baggage allowance and appropriate travel insurance so you can do your Christmas shopping in one of these amazing cities:
1. Tokyo, Japan
The Japanese go mad for Christmas and Tokyo turns into a Christmas decoration bonanza that would put Harrods’ windows to shame. State of the art electronics that haven’t even been released in the UK yet are available at much cheaper prices than in the UK and there are unusual gifts galore from small quirky shops to huge glamorous department stores.

2. Dublin, Ireland
Although many of the big shops on Grafton Street are the same brands you’d see in the UK, the atmosphere makes it worth the trip. Not only that, there are plenty of uniquely Irish gifts on sale and who wouldn’t want to finish their shopping trip with a lovely pint of Guinness in one of the buzzing traditional Irish pubs?
3. Copenhagen, Denmark
Everyone dreams of being somewhere cold and snowy at Christmas. Copenhagen looks just like the winter wonderland you’ve always wanted to experience and delicious mulled wine and tasty treats are everywhere. Shopping is particularly easy on Strøget, the longest pedestrianised shopping street in Europe.

4. Vienna, Austria
Christmas markets in Vienna are famous around the world but even the ‘Visiting Vienna’ website tells people to stay away if they are on a diet, as the treats are so tempting that few can resist. The Christmas lights in the city centre are like something out of a fairy tale with chandelier shapes and draped nets of lights making the pedestrianised streets look like a ballroom.
5. Berlin, Germany
Another place famous for Christmas markets is Germany and, although Berlin is not the most traditional German city, it’s a wonderful place for shopping at Christmas with beautiful department stores like KaDeWe with it’s incredibly Christmas windows, Christmas markets full of handmade decorations and gifts and the divine smell of gluhwein (mulled wine) drifting out from everywhere.
6. Paris, France
If there’s an excuse to go shopping in Paris, take it. Elegance, decadence and opulence is sprinkled with tasteful fairy lights and the food’s not bad either. For the ultimate shopping experience, try the flagship Galeries LaFayette store in the 9th arrondissement. It’s like Harrods but bigger with a magnificent glass domed roof and ten floors of glamorous merchandise.

7. Dubai, UAE
For sheer big money hugeness, you can’t beat Dubai and it means you get to escape the cold weather for a while. Dubai boasts the biggest shopping mall in the world with over 1,200 outlets selling all kinds of designer brands. It even has an indoor ski resort if you’re missing that winter Christmassy feel.

8. Hong Kong, China
Anything you can possibly dream of can be bought in Hong Kong. This bustling city has been an international trade hub for a very long time which gives it such a rich and varied shopping selection. Like Tokyo, it’s also a great place to buy cutting edge electronics and cut price designer goods, even if they aren’t quite the genuine article!
9. New York, USA
Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Saks – we’ve all heard the names of these famous shops so why not visit them at Christmas? Why not catch a fabulous Christmas show while you’re at it? Whether you want a cocktail in a swanky bar or a Christmas tree decorated with 45,000 LED bulbs at the Rockefeller Center, New York has it all.

10. London, UK
Or don’t jet off at all. We’re very fortunate in the UK to have one of the very best Christmas shopping cities in the world right here in our country. London has every type of gift and every type of Christmas experience you could wish for (except real snow most of the time). Harrods, Liberty’s, Selfridges and Fortnam and Mason provide all the upmarket merchandise you could possibly want or, if you want something different, you could have a jaunt up to Camden Town or down to Greenwich Market to find an original quirky gift.
