Check out these unknown backpacking destinations
Although there are no strictly unknown backpacking destinations left in the world and you really would need a spaceship to boldly go where no one has been before, there are still stunningly beautiful unspoilt places to explore. To avoid the teeming masses and lovely but slightly predictable selfies on Machu Picchu or the Great Wall of China but still enjoy breath-taking views and oodles of local colour, here are five of the most beautiful destinations for backpackers who want to go off the beaten track.
Lovcen National Park – Montenegro
With rugged mountains and a gorgeous Adriatic coastline, Montenegro is quickly growing in popularity as a one of a list of popular backpacking destinations for tourists. However, the hordes of selfie stick-toting holiday makers are yet to descend upon it in force and areas of outstanding natural beauty like the Lovcen National Park remain largely unspoiled. Day-trippers often visit the magnificent Njegoš Mausoleum but the unique landscape and amazing bio-diversity of the area warrant a more thorough exploration. With friendly locals and spectacular vistas, the Lovcen National Park is a wonderful addition to any backpacker’s itinerary.
Southern Africa is an area featured on many a backpacker’s Instagram account but the former British colony, completely surrounded by South Africa, rarely gets a look in as a backpacking destination. At over 1000m above sea level at its lowest point, it is the highest country in the world. This dramatic mountainous country is a treat for the eyes with sparkling waterfalls, fascinating cave dwellings and well-preserved dinosaur footprints. The peaceful locals speak English widely and this beautiful country offers a wonderful cultural experience to all those who visit.
Lake Baikal Trek – Russia
Despite being fairly well known, this area is not visited as often as its beauty deserves. This might be due to the fact that Siberia never sounds like a very welcoming place. Admittedly, it is home to some very large brown bears but the lake itself is the most stunning deep blue and holds around 20% of the entire Earth’s fresh water. This incredibly deep lake is surrounded by craggy mountains and pretty log cabins and full of a variety of islands with lovely beaches, meditating Buddhists and sunbathing seals. It freezes over in winter and winter sports abound including ice-fishing, snowmobiling and dog sledding. All round, a trip to Lake Baikal makes being sent to Siberia a good thing.
This collection of 33 atolls is the remote island paradise no one visits and you won’t find it on a list of backpacking destinations. As many parts lack mod-cons, it is ideal for backpackers who want to get away from it all and don’t mind roughing it. Roughing it amid pure white sandy beaches, palm trees and crystal clear vivid blue waters, that is. Located in the equatorial Pacific, it was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of WWII, the battle of Tarawa, and many relics remain from that time. In complete contrast to this, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area encompasses 8 atolls, only one of which is inhabited, with some utterly amazing sea and bird life as well as beautiful untouched scenery. Here the landscape beneath the water is even more breath-taking than that above the water. Extinct volcanoes and underwater mountains help to create a jaw dropping level of bio diversity with stunning coral reefs, a giant clam community and apex predator fish to amaze divers. If you can live without the trappings of modern life, this is well worth a look.
Despite being one of those Balkan countries many people would struggle to point to on a map, Macedonia has some gorgeous historical towns and cities as well as wild open spaces of outstanding natural beauty perfect as a backpacking destination. The capital city of Skopje has one of the best bazaars in the Balkans surrounded by impressive Ottoman architecture. Lakeside city, Ohrid, is a red-tiled beauty and the surrounding area is a rocky tree-filled magnificence sitting on the edge of one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes with perfectly clear sparkling blue water. History and nature marry beautifully in this off the beaten track destination.
